SOUTH OGDEN — Police arrested a man Sunday after they say he dragged a police officer and then led law enforcers on a chase.
At 11:40 a.m., an officer spotted a wanted person sitting in a car in a parking lot near 325 E. 36th Street, said South Ogden police officer Marci Edwards. The man, 28, was a fugitive and had several warrants out for his arrest, she said.
When the officer approached the car, he reached inside to attempt to take the keys away, Edwards said. That's when the driver threw the vehicle into reverse, backed out and then drove forward with the officer's partially hanging out of the vehicle.
"He nearly ran him over," Edwards said.
The officer was dragged about 60 feet before falling from the vehicle, according to a statement released by the department. The officer, who suffered only minor injuries, got into his own car, called for backup, and engaged in a short pursuit.
Near 32nd Street and Washington Blvd. the suspect attempted to jump a median but spun out in a snowbank on the median and hit the curb in the opposite traffic lane. The man got out and ran but was captured a short time later.
Christopher Calton was booked into the Weber County Jail for his warrants as well as for investigation of various new charges stemming from the assault on the officer and fleeing.
