"Some of the greatest sermons are preached by the singing of hymns. ... Hymns play an essential role in spirituality, revelation and conversion."
In church meetings, hymns invite the spirit of the Lord, and they often do it quicker than anything else that is done. The music selected for meetings and classes should facilitate the spirit of worship, revelation and testimony. Music that brings attention to itself aside from these goals becomes a performance and detracts from the spirituality of a meeting.
The hymns of the Restoration carry with them the spirit of conversion. Many came as a result of sacrifice and recall historical events in the church or reinforce the great truths that have been restored.
Home is the place to train children to listen to appropriate music and to sing hymns. The First Presidency has urged LDS parents to fill their homes with worthy music. The church hymnbooks should be featured along with scriptures and other religious books.
The hymns are more meaningful for those who arrive at meetings on time, exit reverently and participate in the music. Hymns can also enrich lesson materials.
Inappropriate music should be eliminated from the lives of church members.
