Angie Jacobs resigned Wednesday as the head softball coach at the University of Utah, while swimming coach Michael Litzinger announced that he accepted a coaching position with the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

"This was a difficult season in many ways, and I felt it was in my best interests — and in the best interests of the team — to move on and pursue something else," said Jacobs.

Utah concluded its only season under Jacobs this past weekend, finishing with a 25-26-1 overall record and a 5-14 mark in Mountain West Conference play. Jacobs, a Ute assistant from 1996-98, returned as the school's head coach last summer after eight years at the helm at Miami University in Ohio.

The resignation was accepted by associate athletics director Mary Bowman, who will begin an immediate search for a replacement.

"We are very committed to our softball program and will seek out the best possible candidate to fill the position," Bowman said.

Litzinger led the women's team to four conference titles and the men's squad to one. He was a two-time MWC coach of the year and coached three all-Americans — Alison McInturff, Heidi Hausknecht and Sterling Richards. During his tenure, the women's team went 53-25 (.679) and the men recorded a 34-32 (.515) tally.

"I would like to thank Dr. (Chris) Hill and the University of Utah for the opportunity they have given me over the last seven years," said Litzinger. "But most of all, I'd like to thank all of the athletes that I've worked with during my time here. It was their commitment to excellence and their devotion that helped Utah become a championship-level program on both the men's and women's side."

A nationwide search for Litzinger's replacement begins immediately.
