George "Ralph" Bailey
1930 ~ 2007
Our loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Ralph Bailey, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family August 24, 2007 after a hard-fought battle with rheumatoid arthritis. He was born December 1, 1930 to Waldmar Francis Bailey and Cassandra Debenham in Salt Lake City and married his eternal companion, Sylvia Sloan, in the Salt Lake Temple September 6, 1957. A graduate of Granite High, he attended BYU, Northwestern University, and Indiana University. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission to Hawaii. Upon returning from his mission, he was immediately drafted into the Korean War where he served in the Counterintelligence Corps. He was an orthodontist in Salt Lake and Davis County for over 30 years. Ralph and Sylvia served a CES mission at the Institute of Religion at Dixie College.
Dad truly loved and lived the gospel. It was the driving force in his life. In a quiet, simple way, he always took care of those in need. He can best be remembered for his immense love of family, learning, and the gospel. He loved history and books and became an avid collector and expert of old Mormon literature. He loved his summer garden of tomatoes and cucumbers, which fed family and friends far and near (whether they wanted it or not).
He is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia Sloan; children, Greg and Joni (NSL, UT), Pam and Bryant Collard (Kaysville, UT), Grant and Nichole (Bountiful, UT), Kim and Scott Best (Eden, UT), Spencer and Natasha (Surprise, AZ); two brothers, Don Bailey and Rex Bailey; two sisters, Margene Bagley, and Annette Ingersoll; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren who will miss garage sales, swinging in the tire swing, and reading with grandpa. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Justin Bailey; and sister, Barbara Hales.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday August 28th, 11:00 a.m. at the Bountiful Hills Ward Chapel, 1190 East Bountiful Hills Drive. There will be a viewing from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday evening at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, and Tuesday from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the chapel. Interment will be in the Bountiful City Cemetery.
Education was very important to Dad and he was so proud of his children's academic accomplishments. Therefore, the family requests that donations be made to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund in lieu of flowers.
