Harold Jon Hicks
"Known to all as Jack"
Harold Jon Hicks, age 68, passed away on March 13, 2008, in Salt Lake City. He was born on November 18, 1939, in Dubuque, Iowa to Helen B. Hogan and Harold G. Hicks.
As a child, Jack's family moved from Iowa to Tucson, Arizona. There he went on to graduate from Salpointe Catholic High School in May of 1958. He proudly entered the Marine Reserves in December of 1958, served active duty training from February 5 until August 4, 1959, and finished as a reservist in July of 1964. Jack was a masterful artist and craftsman in a multitude of disciplines. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson with emphasis in photography and ceramics. He also attained a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City with an emphasis in sculpture.
All of his later pursuits from the arts of his degree to a fine steel home featured in Architectural Digest; demonstrated his dedication to craftsmanship and minute detail. In most recent years, Jack was devoted to the masterful creation and enjoyment of wooden rowing boats. Lake Powell was his favorite destination. In light of this, the family will plan a memorial at Lake Powell in the fall during the annual Kokopelli small boat Mess About.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Heather Gale of Cache Valley, Utah, her two children, Ruby age seven yrs., and Wil age nine yrs., and longtime devoted friend Jacque Nielson of Salt Lake City, Utah. Also mourning the loss of their dear brother are Jack's two sisters; Grace Herman of Sacramento, California, and Barbara Hansen of Brentwood, California; and his aunt Florence Sipiora of Schaumberg, Illinois.
