LAYTON — A relationship between Layton High School's choir director and a former student was inappropriate, according to police, but did not rise to the level of a criminal act.
The Layton Police Department released a brief statement Tuesday regarding the investigation of 62-year-old Joseph Everton, who had a relationship with a then 17-year-old female student. The student graduated last spring. The department said no criminal charges would be filed.
Everton was placed on paid administrative leave after Davis School District officials learned of the relationship, which came to light after a family member of the girl stepped forward.
The student's mother told KSL-TV that her daughter and Everton eloped to Las Vegas on Sept. 25 and were married. The mother said she has a rocky relationship with her daughter, who refuses to talk about her relationship with her former teacher.
Everton has taught in the district since 1978 and at Layton High since 1981. A separate investigation by the district is ongoing.
