An arrest has been made in the fatal shooting of a motorist on I-15 in January.
The alleged driver of the vehicle from which the fatal shot was fired has been arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail. And investigators said Monday additional arrests were possible.
Cesar Ramirez, 18, was driving Jan. 9 on the I-15 southbound collector near 2100 South when he was shot by someone from another vehicle. He died from his injuries a week later.
Initially, investigators thought the incident may have been a case of road rage because the passenger with Ramirez claimed he was texting while driving. But detectives later determined the shooting was more likely gang-related.
Over the weekend, Matthew Day, 20, was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of murder.
"Matthew Day told two people that he was the driver of the vehicle from which the shots were fired. Matthew Day told those two people details about the crime that only investigators and an eyewitness knew," according to a jail report.
Day was actually pulled over by authorities the day after the shooting. But Day claimed he could help detectives.
"Matthew said he would tell me who the shooters were if he knew he was not going to prison," said the investigator who booked Day into jail in his report.
Although Day made that statement, Utah Department of Public Safety Sgt. Jeff Nigbur said the UHP does not make such deals. Any such potential action would have to come from attorneys and judges, he said. It was unclear Monday if Day's proposal was the reason authorities did not arrest him right away.
