West Valley and Taylorsville police have formed a joint task force as they work to track down a man they believe killed two women on the same day, but two years apart.

The task force is investigating the two slayings, one that occurred in 2006 and the other in 2008. Both of the homicides took place in apartments near the area of 4100 South and Redwood Road and police say the two crimes have been linked through forensic evidence.

Sonia Mejia, 29, was killed in her Taylorsville apartment on Feb. 9, 2006 and the second woman, Damiana Castillo, 57, was killed Feb. 9 in her West Valley apartment — exactly two years after Mejia died.

The suspect is said to be a Hispanic male in his late teens or early 20s. Police say he is approximately 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighs 135 to 150 pounds and has short black hair.

The task force will hold a press conference Thursday to reveal more information about the investigation.

People with any information about the two slayings may contact the police tip line at (801) 965-5121 or they may e-mail tips to taskforce@wvc-ut.gov.
