The chief executive officer of University of Utah Hospitals & Clinics is in critical condition after suffering head injuries in a bicycle accident Saturday morning.

David Entwistle, 40, has been the CEO of University of Utah Hospitals & Clinics since February 2007.

The university issued a statement Tuesday confirming that Entwistle was injured in a bicycle accident and is currently listed in critical condition at University Hospital. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

University of Utah Health Care spokesman Christopher Nelson said Entwistle was competing in a triathlon in Tooele County when the accident happened, though no other information was available.

Attempts to contact police for comment about the accident were unsuccessful.

Lorris Betz, the senior vice president for Health Sciences and CEO of University of Utah Health Care, sent out an e-mail Tuesday to all university health sciences employees informing them of the accident.

In the e-mail, Betz said Entwistle's head injuries are serious but he is "expected to make a full recovery."

"I've met with David's family to let them know that all of our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time," Betz said in the e-mail. "His family expresses their sincere thanks to the wonderful staff taking care of him."
