SALT LAKE CITY — A construction worker was in critical condition Monday night after falling 40 feet down an elevator shaft at the City Creek Center construction site earlier in the day.
The man was working on scaffolding below ground but five floors up from the bottom floor when the accident occurred. The Salt Lake City Fire Department responded within 10 minutes and worked to extract the man by using a pulley and hoist system to get him out safely. The man, described as in his mid-50s, was transported by ambulance with multiple injuries to a nearby hospital.
Fire department spokesman Mark Bednarik said officials are not sure what caused the man to fall.
