DALLAS — William H. Goetzmann, who won the Pulitzer Prize in history in 1967 for his book "Exploration and Empire," which looked at journeys exploring the American West in the 19th century, has died. He was 80.

His son, William N. Goetzmann, says that his father died Sept. 7 from congestive heart failure at his home in Austin.

William H. Goetzmann, born July 20, 1930, in Washington, D.C., taught at the University of Texas at Austin for more than 40 years before retiring in 2005.

Other books by Goetzmann included one on the art of the American West that he co-authored with his son and a book released last year called "Beyond the Revolution" explores the ideas of America's great thinkers following the American Revolution.
