The University of Montana moved up to the No. 1 spot in two Football Championship Subdivision polls, one by The Sports Network and one involving a vote of the coaches.

Montana was the national runner-up last season and was ranked second behind national champion Villanova in both preseason polls.

Villanova lost 31-24 to FBS opponent Temple while Montana downed NCAA Division II Western State of Colorado 73-2 on Saturday, leading to a switch in the top two spots.

In The Sports Network poll, Montana received 57 first-place votes while Villanova received 46. Appalachian State stayed at No. 3.

In the coaches poll, Montana received 16 first-place votes while Villanova dropped to fourth with eight first-place votes. The coaches ranked Southern Illinois second and Appalachian State third.
