GUADALAJARA, Mexico — The United States has been a called a melting pot for centuries, and the national handball teams at the Pan American Games epitomize that.

Of the more than 200 athletes on the U.S. squad at the games in Mexico, nine of them have no home state. That's because they're all from other countries, and they all play team handball — a sort of cross between soccer and basketball, where you throw the ball into the opponent's net.

Karoline Borg and her younger sister Anja live in Vollen, Norway, a small coastal town about a half hour from Oslo. It was because of their American mother, who passed away 12 years ago, that they decided to play for the United States in team handball.
