One of several historical sites recently acquired by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the site that was once the cemetery or burial grounds of Far West, Caldwell County, Mo. The site was previously owned by the Community of Christ.
It is located about a mile northwest of the Far West Temple site where the original cornerstones of the temple are still situated and visible.
Longtime Missouri scholar Max H. Parkin writes that an estimated 200 Mormons were buried in the cemetery's unmarked graves, including Elder David W. Patten and Gideon Carter, two of the men killed at the Battle of Crooked River in October 1838.
The Prophet Joseph Smith made Far West his home from the spring of 1838 until his arrest in November of that year.
