Pioneer Day celebrations taking place across the state range from rodeos and parades to pancake breakfasts and firework shows.

New to the celebrations this year are the Days of '47 Frontier Camps, which will take place July 19, 20 and 22-24 on the plaza of the EnergySolutions Arena, 301 W. South Temple.

The camps, which will begin at 2 p.m. each afternoon and continue until after the Days of '47 Rodeo, are free and include groups of Native Americans and cowboys and demonstrators dressed as mountain men, buffalo soldiers and pioneers.

According to Tom Whitaker, one of three Frontier Camp directors, the camps will give people a sense of the role each group played in Utah and provide a kind of living history display in which people can talk to participants and look at the period clothing and demonstrations.

"It's going to show a lot of families and young people some of the heritage and history of our state," said Whitaker.

There will also be free pony rides for kids and free wagon rides for anyone, musical entertainment, food venues and Dutch oven demonstrations each day.

"We just encourage people to … come out and have a fun afternoon and a fun evening," said Whitaker.
