LEEDS, Washington County — Prosecutors in Washington County say they will not prosecute a Leeds man who shot and killed his neighbor earlier this year.

Witnesses told police that Stephen Aizenberg, 70, of Leeds, walked from his house to his neighbor's house on July 18 armed with a handgun. He walked down his neighbor's driveway while pointing his gun at the residents who had called 911, the sheriff's office said.

A man who was visiting relatives at the home shot Aizenberg, killing him in what deputy Washington County deputy attorney Ryan Shaum called a "straight-forward" case of self-defense.

Shaum said the man shot Aizenberg, who had pointed his handgun at him, after "several warnings."

Prosecutors refused to release the man's name. Shaum confirmed the man is a former law enforcement officer from a different jurisdiction.

Detectives at the time said they were unsure what led to the confrontation and why Aizenberg was armed.
