Last month, many Facebook users participated in a challenge that required them to post 10 books that have influenced them.
Using the responses to this challenge, Lada Adamic and Pinkesh Patel, two Facebook data scientists, complied a list of the 100 most frequently mentioned books, which included the Holy Bible and the Book of Mormon.
"We gathered a de-identified sample of over 130,000 status updates matching '10 books' or 'ten books' appearing in the last two weeks of Aug. 2014," Adamic posted on Facebook.
"The demographics of those posting were as follows: 63.7 percent were in the US, followed by 9.3 percent in India, and 6.3 percent in the UK. Women outnumbered men 3.1:1. The average age was 37. We therefore expect the books chosen to be reflective of this subset of the population."
The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling came in as the No. 1 most influential book, followed by "To Kill a Mockingbird," The Lord of the Rings series, "The Hobbit" and "Pride and Prejudice."
The Holy Bible was listed in the sixth position, while the Book of Mormon was listed in the 35th position.
The Book of Mormon has also been found on other lists of inspirational books, including a user-voted list that ranked the book of scripture as No. 1 earlier this year.
