Ken Niumatalolo has posted a 67-37 record since becoming the head coach at Navy in 2007. He was named the American Co-Coach of the Year in 2015.

Here’s a look at some highlights of Niumatalolo’s coaching career:

1990-1994

Niumatalolo serves as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Hawaii, where he played quarterback from 1987-1989.

1995-1998

Niumatalolo is part of Charlie Weatherbie’s staff at Navy as a running backs coach and later is elevated to offensive coordinator.

1999-2001

After four seasons at Navy, Niumatalolo becomes the tight ends coach and special teams coordinator at UNLV under coach John Robinson.

2002-2007

Niumatalolo returns to Annapolis in 2002 to serve as the offensive line coach at Navy under coach Paul Johnson. In 2007, Niumatalolo is named assistant head coach. In 2007, the Midshipmen post an 8-5 record, win the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy, appear in a fifth-straight bowl game, set a school record for rushing (348.8 yards per contest) and defeat Notre Dame for the first time since 1963.

Dec. 8, 2007

Niumatalolo, 42, is promoted to head football coach at the Naval Academy. He becomes the first Polynesian head coach in NCAA history.

Dec. 20, 2007

Niumatalolo coaches in his first bowl game, the Poinsettia Bowl, a 35-32 loss to Utah.

2008

Niumatalolo becomes the first coach to lead Navy to a bowl game in his inaugural season. With a 33-27 victory over Air Force and a 34-0 win over Army, he becomes just the second service academy coach to win the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy in his first year. Niumatalolo leads the Midshipmen to an 8-5 record, the most wins for a first-year coach at Navy since 1934. Among those eight wins is a 24-17 victory over 16th-ranked Wake Forest — Navy's first win over a team ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 since 1985.

Nov. 1, 2008

Navy defeats Temple in overtime, 33- 27, as the Midshipmen fall behind 27-7 early in the fourth quarter before Navy ties the game with 37 seconds left on a fumble recovery. The Middies win the game in overtime in what’s considered to be the biggest fourth-quarter comeback in school history.

Nov. 7, 2009

Navy knocks off No. 19 Notre Dame, 23-21, for its second consecutive victory in South Bend. It marks the first time an unranked Navy team has beaten a ranked Notre Dame squad since 1936.

Dec. 8, 2012

Navy defeats Army, 17-13, in dramatic fashion. The Black Knights drive deep into Navy territory late in the game and seem poised to retake the lead. But Army’s quarterback fumbles and Navy recovers to seal the victory.

Nov. 22, 2013

Navy defeats San Jose State, 58-52, in triple overtime. Quarterback Keenan Reynolds sets an FBS record for quarterbacks with seven rushing touchdowns, including the game-winner.

Dec. 13, 2014

With Navy’s 17-10 win over Army in Baltimore on Dec. 13, Niumatalolo eclipses George Welsh to set the record for most career coaching wins (56) in Navy football history.

With a 17-16 victory over San Diego State in the Poinsettia Bowl, Navy caps the season with an 8-5 record — its 11th bowl game in 12 years and wins its ninth bowl game in school history and wins a bowl game in back-to-back years for the second time in school history.

Nov. 14, 2015

Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds breaks the all-time NCAA rushing touchdowns record in a win over SMU. It’s his 78th career rushing touchdown, breaking the record previously held by former Wisconsin running back Montee Ball.
