This team is made for great things and I am excited to see what this weekend brings. – Weber State catcher
The Wildcats are heading to Cajun country.
The Weber State University softball team’s first appearance in the NCAA Division I Softball Championship will be in the Lafayette Regional where the Wildcats face No. 13 seed Louisiana-Lafayette (39-9) in the opening round at Lamson Park.
First pitch is set for Friday, May 15 at 7 p.m. MDT, and the game will be televised live on ESPN3.
Also joining the regional are Mississippi State (35-19) and Baylor (38-14).
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to go down to play Lafayette,” Weber State senior catcher Mylee Brown said. “We have been put in a position to succeed and our hard work is playing off, but we are not done yet. This team is made for great things and I am excited to see what this weekend brings."
Weber State (38-17) is one of seven teams in this year’s 64-team field that will be making their first appearance in the tournament.
“It (the Lafayette Regional) was nothing I expected, but I'm so excited for the opportunity to go play and make it known that Weber State softball is someone to compete with,” freshman second baseman McKinley Brinkerhoff said.
The Sun Belt Conference champion Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns are making their 17th consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament and 25th appearance overall.
Thirty-two conferences were awarded an automatic qualification, while the remaining 32 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket. The top-16 teams were seeded nationally and will play at campus sites this weekend.
Team pairings were determined by geographic proximity, with the exception that teams from the same conference were not paired during regional competition.
