Jake Heaps, who played quarterback at BYU from 2010-11, signed a contract with the New York Jets after trying out at the team's mini-camp over the weekend.
Heaps announced the signing on Monday, and the Jets confirmed it a short time later.
Heaps was one of two quarterbacks for the Jets at rookie mini-camp and one of 24 players there on a tryout basis. The other quarterback present was the team's fourth-round draft pick, Baylor's Bryce Petty.
By signing with the Jets, he is one of five quarterbacks on the New York roster, including Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Simms and Petty.
The 6-foot-1, 208-pound Heaps came to BYU in 2010 as a five-star recruit and the nation's top quarterback prospect, according to scout.com. He became the Cougars' starting quarterback during his freshman year, throwing for 2,316 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions that season while setting several school freshman records. Heaps also had two games with four touchdown passes against Colorado State and UTEP.
Heaps was the team's starter to begin his sophomore year but was replaced by Riley Nelson after five games. He threw for 1,452 yards, nine touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2011, but announced prior to the team's bowl game that year that he would transfer.
Following the 2011 season, Heaps transferred from BYU to Kansas. He sat out the 2012 season, as per NCAA rules, then completed 128-of-261 passes for 1,414 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions with the Jayhawks in 2013.
Heaps transferred again in 2014, this time to Miami. As a graduate transfer, Heaps was eligible to play immediately. He completed 6-of-12 passes for 51 yards with the Hurricanes.
Seattle Times writer Bob Condotta reported that one of Heaps' high school teammates, wide receiver Kasen Williams, is receiving interest from the Seahawks. Williams participated in Seattle's rookie mini-camp over the weekend.
Another of Heaps' former teammates, wide receiver Ross Apo, also tried out with the Seahawks at the mini-camp. Apo and Heaps played together at BYU from 2010-11.
