The New York Jets traded one journeyman for another on Thursday, signing seventh-year NFL quarterback Josh Johnson and waiving former BYU quarterback Jake Heaps.
Heaps showed his appreciation for the organization following the news of his release.
It was a rough final day for Heaps with the Jets, as he threw four interceptions during the team's practice, according to media reports. Heaps signed with the team after a tryout in May. The rookie went undrafted following a college career that started at BYU, from 2010-11, then went to Kansas and ended with Miami (Florida).
Heaps was New York's fourth string quarterback and only moved up the depth chart when starter Geno Smith had his jaw broken by former teammate IK Enemkpali, who was released after the altercation. Still, the Jets went out and signed veteran journeyman Matt Flynn, then inked Johnson after bringing him in for an audition Thursday.
The second signing spelled the end of Heaps' time in New York. Johnson, drafted by Tampa Bay in 2008, joins his fifth NFL team.
In two preseason games, Heaps only got in for one series at the end of the Jets' game last week against Atlanta. He threw incomplete on his only pass attempt.
