PROVO — The new Lakeview Parkway opens this week to help ease traffic and prepare for future growth on Provo’s west side.
The road will officially open Thursday afternoon, providing a quick and easy route to the Provo airport and the growing neighborhoods in southwest Provo.
“It is a big benefit for connectivity,” Mayor John Curtis said. “It also has a beautiful trail along the side of it, so for pedestrians and bicyclists, it is also a nice addition to our city."
The scenic and smooth Lakeview Parkway begins near Provo Municipal Airport and travels 3 ½ miles to I-15 at the University Avenue exit, near Provo Towne Center.
Crews were finishing up work on the project that has been under construction for the past two years. The road also connects west-side neighborhoods and provides new access to the freeway, in addition to the only previous option of Center Street.
The $39 million project was mostly paid for with leftover money from the I-15 rebuild, and city leaders say it will not only benefit Provo residents, but anyone wanting a direct route to the Provo airport.
To celebrate Provo's opening of the new Lakeview Parkway, a community event 5-7 p.m. Wednesday will give anyone the chance to ride their bikes, jog or walk on the new road the day before it opens to traffic.
