Affable BYU punter Jonny Linehan was slated to be honored this Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium as part of the Cougars' Senior Day.
The Auckland, New Zealand, native will be graduating in April with a degree in finance, after all, and part of his bio on the BYU Athletics website says he's a senior.
But on Monday, Linehan revealed via Twitter that he has one year of eligibility remaining and will return to Kalani Sitake's club next fall.
Linehan's announcement is a major boon for a BYU squad that would have had very little returning experience in the kicking/punting department in 2017.
In the nearly two seasons since he joined the team after originally playing rugby for the Cougars, Linehan has appeared in 23 games and punted 111 times with an average of 42.9 yards per punt. Forty-four have landed inside the 20-yard line and 20 have gone more than 50 yards. He has eight touchbacks to his name.
