BOSTON — In July of 2015 at the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), the announcement was made that USSA had partnered with Fenway Park in Boston to create a Big Air Ski and Snowboard contest under the umbrella of USSA Grand Prix skiing and snowboarding events.

“In addition to snowboarding being in the Olympics, the Grand Prix is in its 20th year and we wanted to showcase an event this season and Fenway Park became a great partner to work with,” said Tom Kelly, Vice President of Communications, USSA. “Fenway Park continues to find creative ways to host events in this legendary stadium and we were happy to bring skiing and snowboarding to town.”

“Being able to compete out here in such an iconic venue is surreal,” said Utah local and skier in the contest, Joss Christensen. “I was asked to be one of the ambassadors of the contest from the beginning to announce and share the excitement of what this contest will bring. To have it finally be the week of competition is really exciting.”

At the US ski and snowboard Association, it is our job to help promote the sport and the athletes to the widest possible audiences, said Michael Jaquet, Chief Marketing Officer USSA. There is no greater example of this than what we are doing here in Fenway Park. We will have the largest paid ticketed crowd ever to see a skiing and snowboarding event. The content generated for digital media and social media sharing of it has already set records and the competition hasn't even begun! We were trending on Facebook today. Putting the sport into the spotlight both on television and in person and bring in the sport to an urban environment where people can consume it and get motivated to go ski and snowboard is what we're trying to do here and I think we have accomplished that.

Other Utah locals to compete this weekend include skier McRae Williams and snowboarder Sage Kotsenburg.

The 2016 Polartec Big Air at Fenway takes place Thursday and Friday. The contest can be watched live on the NBC Sports Network beginning at 6:30 p.m. MST.
