The Utah Falconz hit the home field May 21 after a two-week break and it was apparent the time off did not slow them down. In the second of a two-game series against the Phoenix Phantomz, Utah came away with a crushing shutout of 80-0, an improvement from the first game's 72-6.
The majority of the second half was played by the second and third-string players as the Falconz demonstrated their depth of the roster.
The Falconz offense gained 205 rushing yards, resulting in six touchdowns, two by running back Keeshya Cox and two by Abby Buns. Camille Brimhall and Elizabeth Lane each contributed one rushing touchdown.
Despite windy conditions, the Falconz' passing game improved, collecting 152 yards and four receiving touchdowns. Cox brought in two more touchdowns, with Tina Tela and Lyndi Prestgard scoring once.
Through all four quarters of the game the Falconz' defense imposed its will. In total, there were nine tackles for loss, accomplished by a spread of 12 different athletes. The Falconz also sacked the Phantomz quarterback six times.
Not to let the offense have all the fun collecting yards, this defense intercepted the ball twice, accomplished by Tina Magnum and Shannon Gebbia.
With the win, Utah leads the Independent Women's Football League (IWFL) in both points scored as well as having the least points allowed. In just five games, and three left in the season, the Utah Falconz have secured a playoff berth. The only question remaining is if they will be able to keep their winning and shutout streak alive to earn themselves home field advantage through the playoffs.
One home game remains before postseason. You can see the Falconz at home on Saturday, May 28, at 5 p.m. at Cottonwood High School in Murray. Tickets are $10 for ages 11 and up; children 10 and under are free. Tickets for seniors and veterans are $8.
