Editor's note: In anticipation of the 121st college football season in Utah, DeseretNews.com writer Jay Yeomans is ranking the 50 greatest Division I college football players of all time from the state of Utah. We're counting down the 50 days until Sept. 1 when Southern Utah at Utah and Weber State at Utah State kick off at 6 p.m. Rankings are based on what the player did during his college career.

30. Kyle Morrell, BYU, defensive back (1981-84)

While many people remember him for one iconic play against Hawaii that helped the Cougars keep an undefeated record on a way to the 1984 national championship, Morrell had a great career at BYU.

One of his best seasons came in 1984 when he was first-team all-conference, WAC Defensive Player of the Year and an AP First-Team All-American after he had 70 tackles, six pass break-ups and three interceptions.

For his BYU career, the two-time All-WAC selection had 232 tackles, 16 pass break-ups, eight interceptions, four tackles for loss and three sacks.
