Everyone on both sides of the rivalry remembers Beck to Harline, Burton blocks the kick or "magic happens," but there are plenty of other huge plays from the biggest matchup in local sports that we don't often talk about.
From game-tying field goals to huge interceptions to explosive kick returns to blocked kicks — there are a lot the game-changing plays that slipped through the cracks for the simple fact that someone else stepped up and made another big play.
Here is a look at the best off-the-radar plays from the BYU-Utah rivalry.
Jones with the kick-return touchdown
Everyone remembers Ryan Kaneshiro's 32-yard field goal in 1998 that bounced off the upright to give BYU the win, but the Utes wouldn't have even been in that situation if it wasn't for Daniel Jones. Not only did he catch a third-quarter touchdown, but he added a 95-yard kick return for a touchdown with less than three minutes remaining to close the gap to 26-24 in the fourth quarter.
Matt Nickel's huge touchdown
The Brandon Doman touchdown run or the two huge catches by Jonathan Pittman come to mind when talking about the last game of the LaVell Edwards era at BYU in 2000. But none of those places would have been necessary without a 20-yard touchdown pass from Darnell Arceneaux to Matt Nickel that gave the Utes a 27-26 lead with 2:16 left on the clock.
Josh Savage with the sack
With the Utes clinging to a seven-point lead late in the fourth quarter in 2002, the Cougars were trying to move down field and tie the game. After already having registered a huge fourth-down completion on the drive, BYU quarterback Bret Engemann dropped back to pass. Before he had a chance to get rid of the ball, Josh Savage sacked him to secure the win for the Utes.
Weddle with the interception
Everybody remembers the 2004 game as one of the blowouts from the rivalry, but it wasn't shaping up to be that way until Eric Weddle made his presence felt. After a 16-yard touchdown pass from John Beck to Austin Collie closed the gap to 31-21, BYU got the ball back when Spencer White intercepted Alex Smith.
With the momentum in their favor, the Cougars took a huge shot with a trick play as Collie lofted a pass down the sidelines looking for a big gain. Weddle came to the rescue, intercepting the pass deep in Utah territory to shut down the threat.
The Cougars block the kick
After scoring twice in the game's final 10 minutes to tie the score in 2005, BYU needed a big defensive stop to push the game to overtime.
Utah answered by moving the ball into Cougar territory in the final seconds with a chance to win the game on a 52-yard field goal, but the Cougars blocked the Dan Beardall attempt to stay alive.
Casteel with the touchdown catch
Beck to Harline in 2006 is arguably the most famous play in the entire rivalry, but it wouldn't have even been necessary if not for the big play of Brett Ratliff and Brent Casteel to help the Utes regain the lead.
After a Daniel Coats 2-yard touchdown and with BYU having a 27-24 lead late in the fourth quarter, Ratliff marched the Utes down the field in a perfect display of the two-minute drill. He capped it off when he found Casteel for a 19-yard touchdown strike with 1:19 left in the game.
Martail Burnett with the sack
Austin Collie and Max Hall made "magic happen" in 2007 when they hooked up for a 49-yard gain on fourth and 18 to propel the Cougars to a 17-10 win. But the only reason it was fourth and 18 was because of the massive play from Martail Burnett on the first down of the possession when he sacked Hall for an 8-yard loss.
Joe Phillips game-tying field goal
BYU fans like to say that Andrew George is still running, but the Cougars wouldn't have even needed the overtime heroics if it was for the leg of Utah kicker Joe Phillips in 2009.
He connected on all five of his field-goal attempts, including a clutch 40-yarder in the final minute to push the game to the extra frame.
Moeai gets the ball back
Brandon Burton made the play save that saved the Utes in the closing seconds when he blocked a field goal in 2010, but he wasn't the only player to save the Utes that day.
After Jordan Wynn had thrown a costly late interception with the Utes trailing, Kendrick Moeai jarred the ball lose from Brandon Bradley and recovered it to give Utah the ball right back for the game-winning touchdown drive.
Fourth and a mile (again)
Most fans have a clear recollection of a pair of missed field goals that allowed the Utes to escape the Cougars in 2012, but few remember what set up the epic sequence.
With the Cougars trailing 24-21 and facing a fourth and 12 with :19 remaining, Riley Nelson completed a 47-yard pass to Cody Hoffman to put the Cougars in field goal range.
