BYU’s longtime search for a center has finally paid off.
Polish big man Jakub Urbaniak has committed to the Cougars, according to a Tuesday report from Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.
Standing at 6-foot-9, the 23-year-old Urbaniak has been playing professionally in Poland since the 2022-23 season, having competed at the FIBA level for Poland’s senior national team as well.
In 55 games for Slask Wroclaw this year, Urbaniak has averaged 8.9 points and 5.7 rebounds while shooting 53% from the field, according to Real GM.
In the Eurocup specifically, Urbaniak scored 7.7 points per game, logged 4.7 rebounds and shot 60% from 2-point range.
He has also proven capable as an outside shooting threat, making 34% of his 3-pointers in 35 games against Polish competition this season.
BYU now has two open roster spots remaining, with at least one of them certainly bound to go to another center.
Urbaniak will compete to be BYU’s starter in the post, as Kevin Young and his staff have also been linked recently to a number of other starting-caliber bigs such as fifth-year senior and Utah native Jaxon Kohler, Australian prospect David Okwera and Chinese 7-footer Xu Xin.
Urbaniak is the second international addition for BYU this offseason, joining Lithuanian wing Dovydas Buika.
The Cougars now boast nine newcomers for the 2026-27 roster — Urbaniak, Buika, Collin Chandler, Tyler Betsey, Jake Wahlin, Bruce Branch III, Dean Rueckert, Brooks Bahr and Adam Stewart.
