"A LITTLE PRINCESS: A BabyLit Friendship Primer," by Jennifer Adams, illustrated by Alison Oliver, Gibbs Smith, $9.99 (ages 0-4)

From the series that brought the literary board books "Pride & Prejudice: A BabyLit Counting Primer" and "Little Women: A BabyLit Playtime Primer," there is now "A Little Princess: A BabyLit Friendship Primer" by Jennifer Adams and illustrated by Alison Oliver. Using quotes from the beloved classic story, Adams pulls out themes from the book about being friends or friendly to others. From dolls to rats to sparrows to monkeys, Sara has no trouble making friends with anyone.

Children can learn the value of friendship and the heart of "A Little Princess" with this sweet book, filled with gorgeous illustrations that transport the reader back to Victorian England and India.

"ALADDIN AND THE WONDERFUL LAMP: A BabyLit Sounds Primer," by Jennifer Adams, illustrated by Alison Oliver, Gibbs Smith, $9.99 (ages 0-4)

More along the lines of BabyLit's "Treasure Island" and "Jungle Book" primers for animals and shapes, "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp: A BabyLit Sounds Primer," by Adams and illustrated by Oliver, brings to young children the familiar tale of a poor boy, a lamp and a jinni that grants wishes.

The illustrations are colorful and creative, as individual items and people are pulled from the story to demonstrate the sounds that they make. "Sticks thwack," and "bells jangle." Perhaps a bit more onomatopoeia incorporated into the illustration would have made the point clearer and less awkward, but parents can add their extra sound effects to teach their children about each of the noises included.
