The author who brought to life the characters of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn is having his own character portrayed in a one-man play titled “Citizen Twain.”

Written, directed and acted by Val Kilmer, the play is based on the life of Samuel Clemens and his writings as Mark Twain. Kilmer will present a film screening of his play, titled "Cinema Twain," at Wiseguys Comedy Club in downtown Salt Lake City on May 8, and will conduct a question and answer session with the audience afterward.

It was also recently announced that Kilmer will return to Salt Lake in September for an appearance at Comic Con.

Although Kilmer’s career has predominantly been in film, rising to fame with his roles in the military action film "Top Gun" and "Batman Forever," his acting career actually began onstage at age 17, when he was accepted to Juilliard’s drama division, according to an LA Times article.

Returning to his theatrical roots, Kilmer transforms himself into the American author and humorist during the 90-minute play with a reflective performance that touches on politics, family and religion — all told with Twain's signature satire and wit.

In an interview with the LA Times, Kilmer stated that his play is a character study of Twain. At the heart of the performance is the relationship between Twain and Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, who Twain openly criticized. During the play, Twain offers Eddy an apology he never expressed during his life, as the two never met, according to the article.

The play's title, “Citizen Twain,” is a reference to the 1941 classic film "Citizen Kane," starring Orson Welles. Kilmer told the LA Times that a "citizen" was a "proper way to identify Twain: a man of the people, if there ever was one."

Wiseguys is a 21 and older venue.
