The BYU Cougar football program will be gaining the services of a former Utah high school star.

Nephi Sewell, who won Deseret News 3AA MVP honors in 2016 after he led the Desert Hills Thunder to the state championship, announced via Twitter on Sunday night that he will be leaving the Nevada Wolf Pack for Provo.

Nevada Sports Net's Chris Murray reported on Dec. 3 that Sewell would be transferring.

Listed at 5-foot-11 and 205 pounds, Sewell started at safety in both of the seasons he played for the Wolf Pack. In 2018, he finished with 53 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.

He was the heart and soul of the Thunder's championship squad as a senior in high school, finishing the 2016 campaign with 1,262 rushing yards on 114 carries with 14 touchdowns, including 247 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries in the championship game, a nail-biter against Pine View.

Sewell missed all of his junior season at Desert Hills because of a freak neck injury.

His older brother, Gabriel, was a junior in 2018 at Nevada, while his younger brother, Penei, was a freshman at Oregon.

Nephi Sewell is expected to sit out the 2019 season because of transfer rules and begin playing for the Cougars in 2020.
