WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump welcomed the Clemson Tigers college football team to the White House with an array of fast food meals.
Reporters shared videos and photos of Trump showing off a table full of products from McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger King sitting on fancy plates. Trump hosted the Clemson Tigers after they won the College Football Playoff National Championship over Alabama.
Staff members who work at the White House are currently furloughed because of the government shutdown, so Trump paid for the meal himself, NPR reported.

Flashback: Trump told reporters before the meal about his intentions to serve fast food items.
- "I think we're going to serve McDonald's, Wendy's and Burger King with some pizza," he said. "I really mean it. It would be interesting. And I would think that's their favorite food."
Reaction: It’s no surprise Twitter found the moment comedic since it’s not every day you see fancy plates full of fast food.
Context: There’s a bit of context here. There have been multiple reports over the years that Trump’s diet includes Diet Coke and fast food.
- The Washington Post reported in 2017 that Trump would drink about 12 Diet Cokes per day. That’s in addition to fast food products:
- “Those keeping tabs on President Trump's diet know that Wendy's and McDonald's are staples. While campaigning, Trump inhaled Filets-o-Fish and Big Macs and snacked on Oreos,” according to The Washington Post.
