PAYSON — Police have identified a man and a woman who died Saturday morning after an apparent suicide and accidental shooting during a camping trip in Payson Canyon.
About 12:30 a.m., officers were called on a report that someone had been shot in the area of Maple Lake and the Maple Bench Campground, said Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon.
Police said Ethan Larry Bertrum Timoko, 27, of Orem, was camping with Nakylee Hope Marvin, 24, of Springville, another unidentified man and two young girls.
Timoko and Marvin had been arguing during the trip, the sheriff's office said in a statement. After awhile, Timiko, who was seated in a vehicle talking to Marvin, who was outside the vehicle, used a handgun to shoot himself in the head, and the round from the gunshot left the vehicle and struck Marvin in the neck, authorities said.
The other man called 911 after hearing the gunshot. He and the girls were unharmed during the incident, authorities said.
The gunshot appeared to immediately kill Timoko, while Marvin was critically injured, authorities said. First responders weren't able to save her, according to the release. Her death appeared to be accidental.
