Trade in those cardboard fans for some real ones, and more than 60,000 of them.
While it was widely assumed that BYU was hoping to have full crowds at LaVell Edwards Stadium for home football games this fall, that was made official Friday, as the school announced that is its intention.
“We are really excited to welcome back Cougar Nation into LaVell Edwards Stadium this fall,” said BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe in the announcement. “I know our football team is looking forward to a great schedule this season. We are all extremely excited to be able to see the return of the unmatched atmosphere generated by BYU fans in LaVell Edwards Stadium.”
Along with full capacity, the plan is for fan activities such as tailgating to return as well.
In a video posted on the BYU Football official Twitter account Friday, head coach Kalani Sitake said, “Can’t wait to see you at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Go Cougs!”
The renewal process for returning season-ticket holders has begun, and new season tickets will go on sale to the public in July (fans can reserve a spot for that online now). Individual tickets are also expected to be available in July.
The university did caution that these plans “will continue to be contingent on COVID-19 cases staying at a low rate and will also be influenced by vaccination rates. With these variables, plans are subject to change.”
BYU’s home schedule is as follows:
- Sept. 11, Utah
- Sept. 18, Arizona State
- Sept. 25, South Florida
- Oct. 9, Boise State
- Oct. 30, Virginia
- Nov. 6, Idaho State
Last month, BYU announced several stadium upgrades to improve the fan experience in anticipation for this upcoming season.
As BYU marched through a great 2020 campaign, initially no fans were allowed, but a few thousand were permitted by the end of the season.
Other universities in Utah have not made official announcements about stadium capacity for the 2021 season.
