Marvel Studios’ “Black Widow” had a huge weekend debut, showing signs that the movie theater industry is back and that people enjoy streaming films from their home.

How much did ‘Black Widow’ make?”

“Black Widow” made an estimated total of more than $215 million globally over the weekend, according to an email from Disney.

  • $80 million in domestic box office.
  • $78 million in international box office.
  • $60 million from Disney+ Premier Access purchased.

According to Disney, “#BlackWidow is the largest domestic box office opening since the COVID-19 pandemic began and the largest domestic opening weekend since Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker in December 2019.”

Disney also said “Black Widow” “is the highest domestic opening weekend for a Marvel Cinematic Universe origin story” after other MCU films “Black Panther” and “Captain Marvel.”

Analysis of ‘Black Widow’ numbers

The fact that “Black Widow” made nearly as much through Disney+ as theaters is huge for the streaming model. It shows the impact of Marvel on movie theaters. At the same time, it shows some hesitancy from people going right back to the theaters.

But the Premier Access and theater simultaneous release seems like the right meeting of the middle for studios and theaters. It offers an incentive to go either direction. On one hand, people have the option to stay home to watch the film. On the other, they could go to the movie theater for a cheaper experience if they want it.
