The 6A high school boys golf regular season wrapped up this week with the final region tournaments, and attention now turns to the 6A state tournament next Monday and Tuesday at the Old Mill Golf Course.
The first round gets underway Monday, with the final round on Tuesday.
Fremont, Corner Canyon and Lone Peak won their respective region titles this season. . Defending state champion Lone Peak has won five straight 6A state championships, and will be looking for a sixth next week, but the competition at the top figures to be extremely tight.
The three individual region champs were Farmington’s Jack Summerhays, Corner Canyon’s Bowen Mauss and Lone Peak’s Kihei Akina. Mauss had the top region scoring average in 6A at 67.3, with Akina right behind at 67.5.
Akina has won two straight 6A medalist crowns, and with a win next week he’d become just the fourth golfer in state history‚ and the first in 24 years, to win three individual titles.
The other three-time champs are Snow Canyon’s Jake Ellison (1996-1998), Richfield’s Ryan Oldroyd (1991-1993) and Judge Memorials’ Pete Stone (1997-1999).
