The Salt Lake City Arts Council recently announced a call for artists for the Block 70 temporary public art project. In collaboration with the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City, the arts council will provide opportunities for temporary vinyl murals, according to saltlakepublicart.org. Two proposals will be selected and installed consecutively for six months at the location between 100 and 200 South and Main and State Streets. All artists or artist-led teams residing in Utah are eligible to submit a proposal by Friday, Nov. 1. Visit saltlakepublicart.org/for-artists/calls-for-artists for more information.

The arts council also announced that the Clubhouse on South Temple (formerly the Ladies Literary Club) has been selected to receive funding. The Clubhouse is among 20 cities competing for a share of $2 million in preservation funding provided by American Express, according to nationalgeographic.com/voteyourmainstreet/. The Utah Cultural Alliance recently announced that October is the country’s National Arts and Humanities Month. The state of Utah will celebrate with activities that raise awareness of the arts and humanities and the value the events bring to communities, according to a news release. One activity includes the 22nd annual Utah Humanities’ Book Festival with events throughout the month. The Salt Lake City Arts Council recently announced the Finch Lane Flash Projects. According to a news release, the goal of the projects is to supplement resources for emerging to established individuals and groups by providing professional opportunities. The projects can include performance pieces, sound installations, workshops, film screenings, community gatherings and more. The Utah Division of Arts and Museum recently announced a call to Utah artists creating mixed media and works on paper to enter the statewide annual art exhibition. Online registration is open through Oct. 20. Artwork should be dropped off at the Rio Gallery on Oct. 22-23, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Selected work will be on display Nov. 16, 2019-Jan. 11, 2020. Chef Meryl van der Merwe of Park City recently appeared on QVC to debut her food startup, Jafflz Toasted Pockets. According to a news release, Jafflz are filled with globally-inspired fillings made with 100% natural ingredients with no hormones, nitrates or antibiotics and no sugar added in the bread. Vitality Bowls will soon open at 51 S. Main No. 140 in the City Creek Center in Salt Lake City. The Northern California-based restaurant will open its first superfood cafe in Utah this fall, according to a news release. Following this opening, local entrepreneurs Carmela Sannutto and Daniel Fuentas plan to open additional locations in Utah. According to the news release, the cafe specializes in acai bowls, smoothies, fresh juice, salads and paninis.
