Disney just released the first trailer for its new animated movie, and it’s full of action, adventure and armadillos.
“Raya and the Last Dragon” is set to come to theaters in 2021, and features the voice of “Star Wars” actor Kelly Marie Tran as a young girl who goes on a quest with her pet armadillo to find the last dragon in order to bring peace to her land.
“My whole life, I trained to become a guardian of the Dragon Gem, but this world has changed,” Raya says in the trailer, according to Variety. “And its people are divided. Now, to restore peace, I must find the last dragon.”
The fantasy world of the movie was heavily inspired by Southeast Asia, and the filmmakers traveled to multiple countries — including Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Indonesia — in order to research the film, said producer Osnat Schurer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
As of right now, “Raya and the Last Dragon” is scheduled to come to theaters on March 12, 2021. However, Disney has shuffled several of its movies to new release dates over the last few months due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Most recently, Disney announced that the animated Pixar movie “Soul” would skip theaters for Disney Plus, as the Deseret News reported.

Here is the full synopsis of “Raya and the Last Dragon” from Disney:
- “Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when an evil force threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than a dragon to save the world—it’s going to take trust and teamwork as well.”
