Amid the slew of new Marvel projects announced at Disney’s Investor Day presentation last week, the media titan also dropped the first trailer for “What if...?”— a previously announced animated series that explores hypothetical scenarios within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The new series is set to premiere exclusively on Disney+ this summer, according to Marvel’s website.
Inspired by a comic book series of the same name, “What If...?” will “flip the script on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and reimagine famous events from the films in unexpected ways,” Marvel’s website states.
Each episode will explore a different pivotal moment in the MCU and turn it on its head. For example, one episode will consider the following question: “What if Peggy Carter became a super soldier instead of Steve Rogers?”
The series will feature the voices of several MCU alums, including Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Michael Rooker as Yondu Udonta and Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier.
The series will also introduce a new character— the Watcher, who will be voiced by Jeffrey Wright. According to SyFy.com, Watchers are alien beings who look over Marvel’s multiverses. Various sites are suspecting that Wright’s character will serve as a narrative guide, taking viewers from scenario to scenario.
“What If…?” is directed by Bryan Andrews, with Ashley Bradley serving as the project’s head writer. Andrews’ previous work includes “Samurai Jack,” “The Powerpuff Girls” and “Star Wars: Clone Wars” (not to be confused with “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”). Bradley recently worked as a writer on Netflix’s “Tales of Arcadia” series.
“We’ve been working on this show for two years, and get ready to fall in love. It’s the best,” Bradley tweeted after the “What If...?” trailer dropped last Thursday.
