Unless you’re a parent of small children, Netflix’s most popular show of 2020 probably isn’t what you’d expect.
With the help of Reelgood, a streaming tracking service, Variety recently published a list of the platform’s 50 most popular shows of the year.
- Reelgood calculated the list by tracking how frequently programs appeared on Netflix’s “Top 10,” a feature that made its debut on the platform in early February.
Each day Reelgood assigned points to the shows on Netflix’s Top 10 based on their position on the list (the program in the No. 1 spot tallied the most points while the show in the No. 10 spot received the fewest). After nearly 11 months of divvying out points, the year-end list is finally ready. In order, here are Netflix’s 50 most popular shows and series of 2020:

According to Variety, the Reelgood list revealed that more than 50% of the programs are Netflix original shows and series.
- The two highest-ranking titles — “Cocomelon” and “The Office” — are licensed content.
- The programs in spots three through five — “The Queen’s Gambit,” “Tiger King” and “Ozark” respectively — all came from Netflix.
According to Netflix, both “The Queen’s Gambit” and “Tiger King” broke company records as each series garnered over 60 million views in the first month of their releases, per Variety.
