WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said Kobe Bryant’s decision to wear a WNBA hoodie is a sign of his legacy, according to Makers (via Yahoo! Lifestyle).

What happened?

  • Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna Bryant died tragically on Jan. 26 in a helicopter crash that killed nine people total.
  • A photo of the father-daughter duo showing Bryant wearing an orange WNBA sweatshirt has gone viral. And the WNBA’s commissioner, Cathy Engelbert, recently said that the shirt is a sign of Bryant’s legacy, according to Makers.
  • Engelbert said: “On Dec. 29, one of the last pictures with Gigi was Kobe wearing the orange WNBA sweatshirt we gave him. I never thought he would wear it, by the way. But there he was courtside at a Lakers game, and thank goodness we have that picture to remember his advocacy by.”
  • Engelbert said Bryant is the only NBA player to reach out to her, according to Makers.
  • Engelbert: “It was supposed to be an hour meeting, it was two hours. He was really interested in hearing how we’re going to transform the league, what he was doing on youth and girls basketball. So this was real advocacy for our league. He wanted to help us invest, help advocate.”

A custom WNBA jersey for Gianna

  • Actor O’Shea Jackson Jr. — the son of the rapper Ice Cube — recently shared a custom-made Los Angeles Sparks jersey for Gianna Bryant, who had always dreamed of playing in the WNBA, according to KRON4.com.
