A box of unopened Pokemon cards sold for $408,000 in a recent auction.

What happened?

Heritage Auctions recently sold an unopened case of Pokemon cards for $408,000.

  • The cards come from the “Pokémon Trading Card Game” (Pokémon TCG), which originally launched in 1996.
  • Cards are often purchased in packs that you can find in stores, like Target, GameStop and Walmart.
  • The secondary market — like online retailers and auction houses — has become “red hot” for finding cards, according to Polygon. The recent trend has been “spurred on by social media hype, Logan Paul, and even free-wheeling cryptocurrency investors,” per Polygon. (Logan Paul is a popular YouTube influencer).

Another example

Back in June, one single Pokemon card sold for $100,000, as I wrote about for the Deseret News. In fact, it was one of only seven cards produced. It was the “trainer card,” which was  given to players who won a regional tournament for the Pokemon trading card back in the ‘90s.

  • The card is still available for purchase at $150,000.
