Nearly 25 years after Michael Jordan and the Looney Tunes’ legendary upset win over the Monstars in the 1996 basketball movie “Space Jam,” we’re finally getting our first look at its sequel. “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” is slated to release this summer.
On Thursday, LeBron James, the basketball icon at the center of “A New Legacy,” tweeted out a few stills from the upcoming film, with the caption: “Y’ALL NOT READY FOR THIS SQUAD!!!!”
Here’s what we know so far about “Space Jam: A New Legacy”:
What the movie’s about
Vulture reports that the premise of “A New Legacy” centers on James and his son, Dom (played by Cedric Joe), being sucked into the Warner Bros.’ “Server-verse” by a disgruntled AI (played by Don Cheadle) who is attempting to steal James’s social media followers.
In order to escape, James rounds up a team of Looney Tunes all-stars to take on the the AI’s own “Goon Squad.”
“It’s one of the biggest games, if not the biggest game, I’ve ever played in,” James told Entertainment Weekly. “The Goon Squad is probably the best team ever assembled in basketball history.”
As James travels across Warner Bros.’ servers to track down players and assemble his team, he gets lost in familiar films like “Mad Max,” “Casablanca” and “The Matrix,” Vulture reports.
The ‘New Legacy’ roster
Like the original “Space Jam” movie, this new iteration will feature a cast of NBA superstars, Screen Rant reports. According to the site, fans can expect to see players Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson and Damian Lillard, plus WNBA players Diana Taurasi and Nneka Ogwumike up on the silver screen. IMDb adds that the cast will also feature Chris Paul, Kyle Kuzma and Draymond Green.
“Space Jam: A New Legacy” is directed by Malcolm D. Lee, who previously directed comedy films like “Night School” and “Scary Movie V.” The screenplay for the new movie was penned by Juel Taylor, Tony Rettenmaier, Keenan Coogler and Terence Nance.
