Scientists in the United Kingdom named a new type of tree after the legendary actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

The tree’s new official name is “Uvariopsis dicaprio.”

In the scientific journal PeerJ, the researchers said they discovered a new type of tree that only grows in the Ebo Forest in Cameroon.

  • Scientists from Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, decided to name the tree after DiCaprio because of his advocacy for protecting the environment.
  • Scientists wrote that DiCaprio deserved the honor because he “lobbied extensively on social media to draw attention to threats for the numerous rare Ebo species from the logging concession that had been announced at Ebo earlier that year.”

Dr. Martin Cheek, one of the researchers from the Royal Botanic Gardens, said DiCaprio’s impact was unparalleled.

  • “We think he was crucial in helping to stop the logging of the Ebo Forest,” Cheek told BBC News.

We’ve seen scientists name new findings after celebrities before. In June 2018. researchers from the University of California-Riverside decided to name a new tiny, disc-shaped creature after former President Barack Obama.

  • The creature — named Obamus coronatus (with “coronatus” meaning “crowned”) — has spent most of its life underwater.
  • As I wrote for the Deseret News, the researchers named the creature after Obama because he has a love for science.
