Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of President Donald Trump, will have a prime-time show on Fox News beginning Feb. 22, the network announced this week. It will be the first time that a family member of a sitting president has had a weekly TV show, and the announcement drew immediate ire from Democrats, with some saying the U.S. now has “state TV.”

Lara Trump is married to Eric Trump, the president’s third child and executive vice president of The Trump Organization. The couple have two children and were married in 2014.

Her show, which will air Saturdays from 7-8 p.m. MST, will be called “My View with Lara Trump.” According to a news release from Fox, the show will focus on “the return of common sense to all corners of American life as the country ushers in a new era of practicality.”

“Every week, the program will feature big picture analysis and interviews with thought leaders, shedding light on the headlines driving the national conversation and affecting families around the country,” the news release said.

Lara Trump, whose maiden name was Lara Yunaska, is not new to television or to Fox. She was a commentator on the network between 2021 and 2022, and a frequent guest on Fox shows throughout her tenure as co-chair of the Republican National Committee. Most recently, she has hosted a podcast called “The Right View,” where she has conversed with guests such as Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, Dr. Drew Pinsky and Babylon Bee writers Joel Berry and Kyle Mann.

She began her career as a producer for “Inside Edition” on CBS after earning a degree in communications from North Carolina State University.

Critics of the decision said that hiring Trump took away the network’s claim to be fair and balanced. Writing for Poynter.org, senior media writer Tom Jones noted that Chelsea Clinton worked for NBC News while her mother, Hillary Clinton, was secretary of state, and Meghan McCain was a panelist on “The View” while John McCain was a U.S. senator. But to hire a close family member of a sitting president is different, he said.

“If Fox News really does see itself as a legitimate news outlet, then the hire of Lara Trump is just baffling. Why risk whatever reputation you think you have by giving someone like this her own show, on a Saturday night, no less? Don’t they see the obvious conflict of interest? Don’t they realize that from now on, whenever they try to take a moral high ground about news coverage, one can always return their lob by saying: ‘You hired the president’s daughter-in-law!’”

In a South Carolina town hall, Trump and Fox News seem to make amends

The Trump family’s relationship with Fox has at times been rocky, with news outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, reporting five years ago that Donald Trump’s allies explored buying Newsmax or another network to compete with the cable news juggernaut. While the idea of something resembling “Trump TV” was exciting to the president’s supporters, nothing came of it.

In making the announcement this week, Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott called Lara Trump “a gifted communicator who knows how to connect to the viewers” and said “Lara’s innate understanding of the American public and today’s political landscape will be a compelling addition to our weekend lineup.”

“One Nation with Brian Kilmeade,” which currently airs in Lara Trump’s forthcoming time slot, will move to 8-9 p.m. MST on Sundays, the network said.
