Netflix is giving its own spin to Jane Austen’s classic novel “Pride and Prejudice” — and now fans can get a first look at what to expect.
The first teaser for the upcoming adaptation was released on Tuesday, giving fans a new look of Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet and Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy.
The short teaser features glimpses of Mr. Darcy on horseback, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy dancing together, and Elizabeth watching a sunset from a rooftop.
Adapted for the screen by Dorothy Alderton and directed by Euros Lyn, “Pride and Prejudice” will arrive on Netflix as a six-episode series later this year.
“Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it,” Alderton told Netflix, as the Deseret News previously reported.
“Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy — it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life. The book is a gift to adapt — packed with drama and depth as well as comedy and charm.”
Apart from Corrin and Lowden in the lead roles, the series will also feature Olivia Colman as Mrs. Bennet, Rufus Sewell as Mr. Bennet, Daryl McCormack as Mr. Bingley, Freya Mavor as Jane Bennet and Louis Partridge as Mr. Wickham.
“Playing Elizabeth Bennet is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Corrin told Netflix, the Deseret News previously reported. “To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia and Jack, with Dolly’s phenomenal scripts, is truly the greatest honor. I can’t wait for a new generation to fall in love with this story all over again.”
What other Jane Austen adaptations are on the way?
“Pride and Prejudice” may not have an official release date yet, but there are plenty of other Austen-themed adaptations on the horizon to keep fans busy.
A new film adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility,” starring Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor Dashwood, is coming to theaters on Sept. 11. And BBC is adapting the novel “The Other Bennet Sister” by Janice Hadlow for a 10-part series that is expected to premiere in March.
What fans are saying about Netflix’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’
While some fans are sharing their excitement for the upcoming series on social media, others appear skeptical that it will live up to previous adaptations of the classic novel.
