The Royal Mint is telling fans what they “really, really want” with its newest commemorative coin celebrating the Spice Girls.
The Spice Girls collaborated on the design of the coin with the Royal Mint. In a statement, the band shared their enthusiasm for the project: “It’s a huge honor for us to be celebrated by The Royal Mint and follow in the footsteps of some true music icons. 2026 marks a special year for us as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of our debut single and album. We could never have imagined that we would be recognized in this way — the first female group to be given their very own coin ... what a moment for Girl Power!”
The coin is the first in the company’s Music Legends coin series to pay homage to a girl group. The coin’s release celebrates the 30th anniversary year of the group’s debut single, “Wannabe,” and its debut album, “Spice.”
“The Spice Girls didn’t just dominate pop music, they defined the ’90s,” Lucy Mackenzie, director of product concept for Royal Mint, said in a press release.
“Now, fans and collectors can own a piece of that legacy. The unique packaging celebrating each Spice Girl makes it one of our most collectable Music Legends releases. Girl Power is back! We’re anticipating huge demand from devoted fans and collectors worldwide looking to spice up their collection,” she added.
The collectable 5-pound coin (about $7) invites fans to “Spice Up Your Life” and features a silhouette of all five members striking a pose alongside their autographs. It was designed by Ffion Gwillim, according to the press release from The Royal Mint.
Former band member Emma Bunton shared the news of the collaboration in a post on X.
More on the Spice Girls
The Spice Girls rose to fame in the 1990s, shaking up the previously male-dominated industry to redefine pop music and what an all-female group could do.
They exploded on the charts in 1996; their debut single hit No. 1 for four weeks and the group eventually landed eight songs on the Billboard Hot 100 — including four Top 10 hits — launching a “Girl Power” movement.
What is the Royal Mint?
The company has operated for over 1,100 years. According to the company’s website, it specializes in making “original coin collections and gifts to celebrate special moments, and offer eye opening experiences, investment opportunities and produce currency for the UK.”
The Spice Girls join Freddie Mercury, Elton John, David Bowie, George Michael, Shirley Bassey and Paul McCartney in The Royal Mint’s Music Legend coin series.
