Netflix is taking viewers back to the frontier with the latest adaptation of the classic series, “Little House on the Prairie.”
Season 1 hasn’t even premiered yet, but Netflix is already planning a second season ahead of the show’s July 9 release date this year.
“You haven’t even seen ‘Little House on the Prairie’ yet... but that doesn’t mean we can’t already be hyped about Season 2,” Netflix’s Tudum shared.
The streaming giant released a first look-photo of the series along with the announcement on Tuesday.
The family drama is an origin story of the American West, showcasing the struggles and triumphs of life on the frontier. Netflix says the latest series “will anchor Netflix’s slate of warm, emotionally grounded storytelling.”
Of the second season’s renewal, Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of U.S. and Canada scripted series, said in a statement, “We are delighted to renew this beautiful reimagining of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ for a second season ahead of its Netflix debut.”
Howe continued, “With its hopeful spirit and emotional authenticity, we’re confident that ‘Little House’ will deliver even more of what fans truly love.”
‘Little House on the Prairie’ Netflix series
Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote her “Little House” stories during the Great Depression and first published them in the 1930s. They were later adapted into the television series “Little House on the Prairie,” which ran for nearly a decade starting in the 1970s.
Since publication, the book series has sold more than 73 million copies in over 100 countries and has been translated into 27 languages, according to Tudum.
Netflix is bringing Wilder’s stories to life for a new generation with its reboot series.
“I am absolutely thrilled with the brilliant cast we have assembled,” showrunner and executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine said in a statement. “Each one of them brings something special to the ‘Little House’ universe and will help make this story come alive for a whole new generation.”
The 1970s ‘Little House’ cast
Stars of the original television series included Melissa Gilbert as Laura Ingalls, Michael Landon as Charles Ingalls, Karen Grassle as Caroline Ingalls and Melissa Sue Anderson as Mary Ingalls, according to IMDb.
Netflix’s new cast
The reboot cast features Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls; Luke Bracey as Laura’s father, Charles Ingalls; Crosby Fitzgerald as Laura’s mother, Caroline Ingalls; and Skywalker Hughes as Mary Ingalls, Laura’s older sister.
While some fans are eager for a fresh take on the classic tale, others were surprised to learn a first season was even in the works.
