The First Presidency released architectural renderings Monday of the exteriors of five new temples planned in North America for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. (See renderings below.)
The church has 202 operating temples and another 104 temples underway either through active construction, completed architectural renderings or selected site locations.
Here’s a breakdown:
- 51 temples are actively under construction.
- 2 temples have scheduled groundbreaking ceremonies. (Tacloban City Philippines Temple on Jan. 18 and Cali Colombia Temple on March 1.) Groundbreakings happen after building permits have been issued by local governments.
- 22 temples have architectural renderings released by the First Presidency. Renderings signal that proposals provided to government officials are advancing.
- 29 temples with exact site locations selected and announced by the First Presidency. Site locations indicate land has been purchased and church staff has begun to work with governments on building approvals.
The church is in the midst of the largest expansion in temple building in its history.
The 104 temples under construction or active planning represented by renderings and location announcements represent more than 50% of the current total of operating temples.
That’s not all: An additional 114 temples have been announced but have yet to reach one of those benchmarks.
The church has added some employees to handle the expanded temple construction, but most of the work is done through trusted contractors, according to past statements by Brent Roberts, the managing director of the Special Projects Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
“I’ve added scaled supervision as I need it, but we’ve stretched (our project managers), too,” he said. “Because our contractors have such great ability and we choose them wisely, then the project managers, for example, can do more temples than they did before. So we’ve added incrementally, but not what you would imagine.
“We’ve been very fortunate, and we’ve been fortunate to find good people that want to work temples.
Leaders dedicated 16 new temples in 2024, the second-most in a single year in church history.

Latter-day Saints consider temples their most sacred places of worship.
