Construction of the Teresina Brazil Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is set to begin this April, with a groundbreaking ceremony to be held Saturday, April 18.
Presiding over the ceremony will be Elder Ciro Schmeil, first counselor in the church’s Brazil Area presidency, according to a news release published on ChurchofJesusChrist.org.
“Jesus Christ is the reason we build temples,” the late church President Russell M. Nelson taught when he announced the Teresina temple and 14 others in April 2023 general conference.
“Each is his holy house,” he said. “Making covenants and receiving essential ordinances in the temple, as well as seeking to draw closer to him there, will bless your life in ways no other kind of worship can.”
The Teresina temple was the 19th announced temple for Brazil and is one of 14 temples that the late President Nelson announced for Brazil during his ministry.
To be built on a 3.60-acre site located in the Noivos sector of Teresina in the northeastern state of Piauí, Brazil, the Teresina temple will be a structure of approximately 25,420 square feet. It will help serve the more than 1.5 million Latter-day Saints that reside in the nation.
Of the nation’s 23 total temples, 11 have been dedicated and are in operation. The remaining 12 are either under construction or in planning and design stages.
